This year marks the 13th year I’ve been writing and publishing homilies based on the readings read each week in Catholic Churches. When you attend Sunday mass in a Catholic Church you hear the same readings no matter where you are. Normally the first reading is from the Old Testament, and the other one is always from one of the Gospels and they are linked thematically. There is also another reading, normally from the New Testament, but I only preach on the 1st reading and the Gospel.
Frankly I started this because I found myself dissatisfied with the preaching I heard every week. I don’t expect Martin Luther King level preaching each week but I felt (feel) a lack of interest in the work of preaching well. Too often I hear either a retelling of the readings I just heard, or 10 minutes of random points looking for a theme.
Full disclosure, I was a priest for 3 years before I left active ministry in 1997. I loved preaching and miss it still. I worked hard at it, recognizing that was how I connected with the overwhelming majority of the parishioners. I have to confess little patience for those who don’t share that value.
I publish these homilies the week before, normally on Tuesday evening. This was at the suggestion of a friend who thought this might be good for Bible studies that meet the week before. I haven’t missed a Sunday since July 14, 2013. I also write a homily each Christmas. Below you can find links to each week’s readings and homily.
If you wish you can email me at here and I will email the homily to you, again, normally on Tuesday evenings.
Thank you for your interest.
